Washington, DC: Nicole & Patrick's Destination Engagement Session

There was never really much question about the future of their relationship, they both knew pretty early on. It wasn't a question of if they'd get engaged - just when it would happen. They had meet in college, mutual friends introduced them and they just hit it off right away. She was exactly the kind of laid back, fun girl that he probably had started to think didn't exist. But she did exist, and now she was with him. Even today, you can tell that when he looks at her he still can't believe that he got so lucky. And when they first got together, she couldn't believe that she had find a guy that was as much a gentleman as he was hilarious. And even years later, only a few minutes go by at a time without him making her break out into laughter.
So since they knew it was only a matter of time before they got engaged, she didn't think anything of it when he said that he wanted to pay off some bills before they he got a ring. Months went by and when he encouraged them to eat at home more and go out less, she just thought that he was saving for the bills. Little did she know, he had already paid off all he needed to and was just waiting for her ring to finish being designed. It arrived just in time for their annual trip to the Outer Banks with a group of their friends. He talked her into taking a walk down the boardwalk nearby and found the prettiest spot. When he pulled out the ring, safe to say she was completely speechless, at least for a second or two. Then, when she fully realized what was happening, she said yes.
NICOLE & PATRICK
We were psyched for Nicole and Patrick's engagement session for many reasons - it was in D.C. (where they live and will be married in November of 2010), Patrick is an architect and therefore just as excited for cool architectural locations as we are, and of course because they are tons of fun to be around. These two just love being together, they have a natural rhythm and comfort that make you feel good just being around them. We started the session at Catholic University, where they met. We took some time wandering around the architectural building (where Pat spent most of his time in college) and there are no other words - we loved it. It was like sensory overload for us - way too many cool places to shoot.
From there we went over to a couple of the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery. Again, there were tons of incredible locations for us to photograph Nicole and Patrick. They were totally up for anything, which we were loving, of course! We finished the day over at the Hotel Monaco, right in the middle of downtown D.C.
Nicole & Patrick - thank you so much for scooping out so many awesome locations for your session. We had such a great time with you both...can't wait for your wedding next year!
Note: Just as a reminder, Kathleen writes the story (above) and Rob does the short narrating under each photo. We hope that both of our perspectives really help you get to know all of our wonderful couples just a little better. Also don't forget to pick your favorites! You can pick as many images as your favorites as you would like, you are not limited to just one. The photos with the most votes are updated in the FAVORITE PHOTOS section at the top of this site. |
We started Nicole & Pat's session at Catholic University which is where they both met. We thought it would be fun to photograph around The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception which is not technically on the campus but might as well be. According to the church's website The Basilica "is the largest Roman Catholic church in the United States and North America, and is one of the ten largest churches in the world. " It certainly had some fun architectural details that we wanted to incorporate.
Nicole and Pat were so great, we really loved how they held eachother...
...and often laughted and smiled with eachother. This one is my view...
...and this is Kathleen's view of the same moment.
We love this photo of Nicole bringing out her best Voque side...
...and Pat pulling out one of his best GQ stances.
What fun would their session be if we were serious the whole time. They jumped up to these ledges where we captured these moments.
Before leaving the basilica we took advantage of the super wonderful lighting to grab a nice relaxed portrait of the two of them.
We spent some time just walking around the campus photographing where ever we felt inspired. The simplicity of this building and the lines and patterns that the grass, the sidewalk, the rocks and the building itself made up were really interesting to us.
Here is a view from the side at the same spot.
While walking through the campus we stopped at the front of the library where I captured this shot. It felt very collegiate to us so we thought it would be a good spot to photograph.
Kathleen captured this view as I was getting the one prior I love how she used one of the doorways to create this really interesting negative space.
Pat is an architech and obviously spent a lot of his college career in the artchitech building at Catholic. In one of the main hallways there was this art installation made up of a bunch of hanging fabric. This is my shot...
...and this is Kathleen's shot at the very same moment from a classroom across from the hallway.
When you see a couple laugh together this much you simply know they are pefect together.
We really loved the red wall and the details throughout the building.
We also really loved how Pat was looking at Nicole in this one.
After we spent sometime inside, we headed out where I captured this one of Nicole and Pat taking a short rest on a nearby bench.
Before leaving the campus Kathleen captured this quick photo.
Since Pat is an architech and we were in a city filled with plenty of really cool buildings it of course made sense to visit a couple. We started by heading over to the National Gallery of Art. This set of staircases is very famous in the archtech world as well as the photography world so we thought it would be only fitting to start right there.
Kathleen captured this shot from the side...
...as I was capturing this horizontal one at the same moment.
The gallery had so much to offer and there was something about this simple brown cushion on this bench and how it stuck out in this sea of concrete that was really interesting to us. This is how I was inspired to photograph this area.
Kathleen captured a more laid back shot of Nicole and Pat.
The moving walkway between the two sides of the gallery is of course a piece of art itself and it was really fun to photograph as well. This is my shot...
...and this is Kathleen's super awesome, totally cool shot a moment later. Can you tell how much I love it!?! :)
We headed out to the courtyard and took advantage of the waterfalls for the next couple of photos. This is my view...
...and this is Kathleen's view of the same moment.
The courtyard of the National Gallery of Art had very similar details to that of the Louvre in Paris (as we have found is the case in many parts of Washington DC - Paris seems to be a great influence in a lot of the DC city design). This reflection shot was taken by one of the glass pyramids in the courtyard.
After we grabbed a quick bite to eat, we headed over to the National Portrait Gallery. One of our favorite things in photography is depth of field and using it to get different and interesting shots.
Their laughing and pure happiness between eachother was so contageious, we loved it!
As they kissed above me, I thought this would be a fun way to photograph Nicole's ring.
Since we were in the the National Portrait Gallery, we thought it would be fun to not take ourselves so seriously and to take some not-so-serious portraits...
...and just one formal photo. :)
Nicole and Pat brought us across the street to the Hotel Monaco where Pat couldn't wait to show us this staircase. He thought we would really enjoy it and boy was he right. It was fantastic!
Before heading outside to finish up, we stopped to take this shot between these columns. It felt very DC to us.
Pat is a huge Red Sox fan so it was only fitting for him to throw on his hat for a couple shots before we finished up. This is Kathleen's view...
...and these are mine.
Nicole & Pat, we had such a fun time with you both. Thank you so much for inviting us down to DC and showing us such a great time while we were there. We can't wait until your wedding in next year, it is going to be here before you know it! ~Rob & Kathleen~ |
