That morning while she was getting ready, only one thing was stressing her out. Her hair. Everything else she had already taken care of - all the details were meticulously in place, friends and family had arrived with no problems and the getting married part - well, that would be easy. Ever since she met him she just knew that he was the man she would marry. Not only was he incredibly handsome he was also a perfect gentleman - almost a throwback to another era. He would open the door for her, and my personal favorite, kiss her hand at every opportunity. So walking down the aisle to him, saying the vows, placing the ring on his finger - that would be simple. Plus, he'd be by her side holding her hand all the while.
That's the kind of couple they are, they get strength from one another. He takes on her joys and stresses as his own - when she's happy, he's happy; when she's stressed, he's stressed. Because happy moments are even happier when the one you love is standing by your side. And stress is easier when you know that someone else cares as much as you do. Even if it is about your hair. So it was no real surprise that before they saw each other for the first time that morning he asked us about her hair. It wasn't that he had an ounce of doubt that she would look gorgeous, it was just that he knew (via text message) that she had been stressing about it that morning and he wanted to make sure everything had worked out perfectly for her. It's what he does, what he'll always do.
She is not a high-maintenance girl by any means, which is probably why she was so unsure about what to do with her hair that morning, there were so many options. After several tries, she finally decided on the perfect style - a sleek, elegant and simple ponytail. Not what she would have initially thought of, but when it was put together with the dress she knew it was perfect. When she looked in the mirror, she knew he would love it. And he did. When he saw him for the first time that day (they did a "first look" before the ceremony), his eyes conveyed all the words that he was unable to express at the moment - she was radiant. He'd known that she would be his wife since they first started dating and had probably imagined what she would look like in a white dress a hundred times - no doubt, the reality was much better. He had her do a twirl so he could take it all in, and they both agreed - her hair was perfect.
From that moment on, they were completely connected the whole day. Even when they were in separate parts of the room, talking to friends and family, they were both radiating the same incredible level of joy. When they were side by side, they could barely keep their eyes off one another. And then there was our personal favorite part of the whole day... When they were up in the chairs for the hora holding hands in the middle, he took her hand and kissed it softly. In the midst of all that fun, noise and craziness, he was giving her just one more reminder that he will always be that perfect gentleman, no matter how crazy life gets.
LISA & ALEX
We started the morning with Lisa and her girls where they were getting ready at the Omni Hotel in New Haven. Lisa already looked gorgeous, even before her hair and make-up were done - any stress she may had been feeling were not apparent. She was laughing with her sister and joking with her friends all morning. She gushed when she showed us the custom necklaces a friend had made for her bridesmaids. Lisa works in the fashion industry, accessories specifically, so naturally she'd pick something dramatic and beautiful for her girls to wear with their classic black tea-length J. Crew dresses.
Once Angela and Janice from Naomi Martinez's Salon had worked their magic, it was time for Lisa to put on her Alvina Valenta gown. It was like it was made for her - delicate and gorgeous in an understated way, much like Lisa herself. While her mother and sister took care of the many buttons along the back of the dress, Lisa looked calmly out the window. She was officially ready for the day to begin.
We then headed over to Edgerton Park in New Haven for the first look and pictures ahead of the ceremony. Alex was practically jumping out of his skin he was so excited to see Lisa. As he heard her approaching about to put her hand on his shoulder, he already had a huge grin on his face (one that was pretty much constant throughout the whole day). Lisa and Alex had tons of time for photos - throughout the park (having a great time with Lisa & Alex all the while, they are just too cute together) and then again at the New Haven Lawn Club after the ceremony.
When the reception began, we were delighted when we heard Lisa & Alex's first dance song, "Make You Feel My Love," the version recorded by Adele. They had fallen in love with the song when they first heard it on our website - we love it when couples get ideas from our sites! We think they can be a great resource for wedding planning. No doubt this blog post will spark many ideas all you brides out there - Lisa & Alex really did a great job bringing their personality into their day. After the first dance, the floor was packed for the rest of the night (tons of 90's hip hop - clearly a crowd favorite) thanks to Top Notch Music Productions.
Note: We think of each wedding and engagement post that we create to be like a mini online album. We love our couples and love sharing their stories, details and the emotions that make up their day with all of you. As always, Kathleen writes the story (above) and Rob does the short narrating under each photo. We hope that both of our perspectives really help you get to know all of our wonderful couples just a little better. Also don't forget to pick your favorites! You can pick as many images as your favorites as you would like, you are not limited to just one. The photos with the most votes are updated in the FAVORITE PHOTOS section at the top of this site. All that being said, we really hope you enjoy Lisa & Alex's Wedding!
What a day Lisa & Alex had. When Kathleen and I arrived to Lisa's hotel room at the Omni Hotel in downtown New Haven we were welcomed with this perfect view of the city.
Lisa had a friend make beautiful custom jewelry for her bridesmaids which perfectly complimented her silver J.Crew wedding shoes.
We really loved her gorgeous pink bouquet.
Kathleen captured this shot of Lisa getting the final touches done to her makeup...
...while I was catching Lisa's girls helping each other with their jewelery.
We really love the moments when everyone is getting ready. There is so much anticipation and positive energy and we love being able to capture it all.
I am not completely sure why but the way a bride puts on her earrings is really emotional. It kind of makes it all real.
As Kathleen was photographing Lisa's Mom and sister helping her into her dress I went to the other side of the room...
...to capture this portrait of Lisa a couple of moments later. She looked absolutely radiant.
We of course could not resist rocking out a few more photos in front of the window, it was letting in the most incredible light.
This is one of Kathleen's favorite images of Lisa from the morning.
Right before heading out Lisa stepped in front of the mirror to take one more look as her Dad made sure he got one more photo. It made me laugh so we just had to include it.
We headed over to Edgerton Park in the middle of New Haven where Alex was patiently waiting for his bride to arrive. Kathleen and I absolutely love first looks and the energy and emotion between these two was simply wonderful.
How cool is this stone wall we found?! We thought it made for such an awesome backdrop.
A sweet and simple image.
We liked this stone wall so much that we thought it would be a great place to get one of our relaxed wedding party shots.
A couple wedding party details!
Kathleen and I took Lisa & Alex around the park and really enjoyed the beautiful day with them. They scheduled a great amount of time (which we highly suggest) for photos so we got to do a ton of wonderful things with them.
They held each other so sweetly in this one.
Lisa wore a beautiful cathedral length veil and as if we planned it we got just the right amount of wind to gently lift it up. So perfect!
If you have never been to Edgerton Park, then you should definitely go. There are so many picturesque locations. This is my shot...
...and this is Kathleen's a moment later.
After spending a few minutes with Lisa & Alex, we noticed that the wedding party totally wanted to get into a couple more photos. Lisa and her girls often spent a lot of time laughing and having fun throughout, they were such a great group!
We wanted to rock out a straight forward shot...
...and of course grab a couple more wedding party details.
I totally love this shot that Kathleen captured of Lisa & Alex walking through the park.
There is something so special to us about a very simple photo, it is one of the things that help maintain the timelessness of our style.
As we were all heading out of the park to go to the New Haven Lawn Club, Alex gently grabbed Lisa and gave her a kiss on her forehead.
Both their ceremony and reception were held at the New Haven Lawn Club. We have been to the lawn club on numerous occasions and it is by far one of our favorite places to photograph. The building itself (both inside and out) has really great architectural details and textures and there are so many little nooks to photograph in and around.
Their pink flowers combined with the chandeliers and candles over the fireplaces made for such a romantic atmosphere for their ceremony.
A couple more ceremony details.
Kathleen photographed Lisa being walked into her ceremony with her Dad.
Lisa was nothing but happy and filled with joy as she took the hand of her soon-to-be husband.
As part of the Jewish part of their ceremony Alex broke the glass (and did it perfectly by the way) which was followed by their first kiss.
Right before walking out of their ceremony, Alex grabbed Lisa's hands, pulled her in closely and gave her a kiss on the cheek, which of course made her smile from ear to ear.
The front of the New Haven Lawn Club is such a cool place for photos, there is always perfect light and the texture of the bricks is wonderful.
While I was capturing the two above, Kathleen ran inside and took this shot through the door.
We felt so lucky to get to photograph Lisa & Alex for as long as we did. Photography was really important to them and they made it a point to schedule time throughout the day. I love how into each other they are in this set especially in the one that Kathleen got in the bottom left.
To us, the moment right before a kiss is so amazing.
We just had to take a few more in front of the building before heading into their reception. They were just so incredibly sweet!
During Lisa & Alex's cocktail hour we took the opportunity to capture the INCREDIBLE details that made up this space. Keep going, there is a reason that the New Haven Lawn Club is among our favorite places to photograph at.
Lisa & Alex's cake by DiMare Pastry Shop in Stamford, CT was not only incredibly cool looking it was delicious as well!
Lisa & Alex were all about the details, they must have thought of everything. The room at the New Haven Lawn Club already has really great art-deco chandieliers, but they had the room decked out with candles, flowers and colorful up-lighting (which changed throughout the evening) for atmosphere.
We captured a few of the trays of appetizers all laid out simply because we liked how it all looked.
How AWESOME is this?!! They are such a fun couple and this completely made us laugh when we saw it! I told you, they thought of everything!!
They danced their first dance to one of our favorite song: "Make You Feel My Love".
The energy really picked up as the cultural dances began!
The entire room burst out in excitement as Alex was lifted high above the crowd for the beginning of the Hora. Kathleen captured this shot from the stage...
...as I was in the middle of it all as Lisa was lifted above to meet her husband. There was so much energy and excitement in the room. It was so much fun!!
We love the sweetness of this moment.
Both Lisa's Dad and Alex's Dad were also lifted up for a couple of minutes.
Between one of the courses their siblings had surprised them with a slide show.
A little slow shutter action!! :)
Cake cutting!! :)
Lisa danced with her Dad and Alex danced with his Mom.
One of the up-lighting fixtures provided a really cool spot to photograph their rings on. People walking by totally thought I was crazy while sitting on the ground taking this photo. :)
Lisa & Alex thank you so much for inviting us to capture your wedding. We hope you had a great time in Hawaii filled with sun, sand and shave ice! ~Rob & Kathleen~
